"I am convinced that January and February 2005 have been historic months for the U.S. recreational boating industry. The Marina Operators have united in A.M.I. (Association of Marina Industries); they have initiated exciting new educational efforts and endorsed Grow Boating. The COMITT Conference has led to the formation of a new Industry Council that will tackle our collective education, training and employment problems. And, perhaps most importantly, the Industry has truly come together with the Grow Boating campaign introduced at the Miami Show. Kudos to all those persons in our Industry who have done and continue to do the hard work that will see these efforts bear big time fruit for all." ---Ed Lofgren, 3A Marine Service & MMTA Education Committee Chair Get ready for a week on the water! Soon you will be able to calculate the significant economic contributions your marina makes and employ the information to advocate on behalf of your business needs. The Association of Marina Industries (AMI) and Recreation Marine Research Center (RMRC) at Michigan State University are conducting this first annual nation-wide survey of marinas. The data that is collected will be used to: (1) monitor marina trends including numbers of slips, drystack storage, condominium slips, off-season storage, transient rentals and amenities, (2) develop an easy-to-use tool for estimating the economic impact of marinas and, (3) analyze marina performance (e.g., occupancy, revenues). Marinas who complete the survey will have exclusive access to reports on marina trends and performance including occupancy rates and financial ratios (e.g., revenues/slip, wages and salaries/revenues). They will also have right to use a web-based tool to estimate the economic impact of their marina on local communities. If a sufficient number of marinas respond we will produce reports for states and/or regions of the country. With the emergence of the RMRC as the recreational boating industry's premiere research entity, it is time to address the lack of quantitative and non-quantitative data on the economic value of marinas to cities and states across the country. This information will used in support of marinas and to oppose policies, regulations and taxation schemes that disadvantage marinas. Called the Marina Economic Impact and Values System, this on-line tool will provide the information absolutely essential to the marina industry's advocacy efforts and could be repeated/applied in different areas of the country without having to conduct entirely new economic impact surveys and analyses. Once this project is complete, an enormous amount of new information on the value of marinas to cities and towns across America will be at our collective fingertips. MMTA will provide a link to this important tool as soon as it becomes available. Highlight your Business Online Easy access to the tools and information needed to boat and fish are essential in getting more people out on the water. Retailers play a vital role in fulfilling those needs. To make finding a retailer easy, RBFF has added a new tool to WaterWorksWonders.org. When anglers and boaters visit WaterWorksWonders.org and search for events or access points, their search results will now include a listing of fishing and boating businesses surrounding the area searched. Be sure your business is included in these listings by submitting your information at: Water Works Wonders. Posting is free and your listing will become part of the permanent online business directory on the site. Don't miss this great opportunity to attract more customers. For more information or help submitting your listing, contact Jennifer Wulff at jwulff@rbff.org or (703) 519-0013 ext 110.
