Want to Assist Fellow Marine Trades people affected by the Tsunami?
Here is Your Chance To Help:

Message from MMTA Government Relations and Legal Counsel, Jamy Buchanan Madeja:

"There is a small fishing village in Sri Lanka which has not received any media attention or government aid in reestablishing basic tools of their trade, such as nets and boats, since the recent tsunami hit.

Using the donated services of a personal friend, Wade Campbell, who owns a Sri Lankan sea kayaking and river rafting business, a few MMTA members are making donations to help individuals who make their living from the sea return to their trade by buying or fixing nets and boats.

If you are interested in joining us in making a contribution of any amount, please contact Jamy Buchanan Madeja at 617-227-8410 or via email at info@buchananassociates.com for details."

    MMTA Sponsored Education Seminar-April 14, 2005
Everything you ever wanted to know about MTSA and ISPS but were Afraid to Ask1

In July, 2004 new regulations from the Department of Homeland Security become effective that govern if and how you may receive certain vessels at your facility.

This body of regulation is from the Maritime Transportation Security Act (MTSA) and The International Code for Security of Ships and Port Facilities (ISPS). They are collectively referred to as "MTSA/ISPS."

If you are a marina operator, and you wish to accommodate
    • certain foreign flagged vessels and vessels sailing under a flag of convenience
    • any vessel arriving from a non-US port
    • certain yachts in charter service
    • any vessel carrying a SOLAS certificate
You MUST be in compliance with the new regulations or risk fines and/or suspension of operations.

For detail on the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) 33 Chapter 1 Parts 104 and 105, visit: http://www.uscg.mil/d1/units/msobos/mtsa/mtsa.htm

To assist MMTA members in navigating the new regulations and what it means to your facility, MMTA is sponsoring an educational seminar courtesy of:

    1. What is MTSA? The MARITIME TRANSPORTATION SECURITY ACT (PUBLIC LAW 107-295-NOV. 25, 2002), An Act To amend the Merchant Marine Act, 1936, to establish a program to ensure greater security for United States seaports, and for other purposes.

What is ISPS? The International Code for Security of Ships and Port Facilities (International) The Diplomatic Conference on Maritime Security, in December 2002, adopted new provisions in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974 and this Code to enhance maritime security. These new requirements form the international framework through which ships and port facilities can co-operate to detect and deter acts that threaten security in the maritime transport sector.
