The sixth annual National Fishing and Boating Week, America's biggest week for on-water events, runs June 3 through 11. This year, more than 1,500 events are expected including fishing derbies, regattas, educational events, boating demonstrations, festivals and many other hands-on activities that will allow Americans to experience the fun of boating and fishing.

"National Fishing and Boating Week is a great time for families to get together and plan a day on the water," said Bruce Matthews, president of the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (http://www.rbff.org). "The week was designed not only for kids of all ages, but for parents and grandparents as well. Many of the events offer firsthand instruction on topics from knot-tying and boating safety to casting and properly releasing a catch."

MA MARINE TRADES SPONSORS ONSET POKER RUN
Annual Fund-Raiser A Winning Hand For Village Association

The Onset Bay Association showcases the beauty and benefits of having a coastal setting on Saturday, June 24 when thirty boaters motor out from Onset into Buzzards Bay to participate in the organization's annual Paradise Poker Run fund-raising event. Participating mariners will cruise to five sites on the bay and collect a poker card at each location for the chance of making the winning poker hand of the day.

But the real winner for the day will be the Onset Bay Association. In previous years, the organization has had great success with the Paradise Poker Run and it has become a staple in its yearly lineup of fund-raising events. Last year's event helped the OBA continue its services to the community throughout the year. The funds generated by the Poker Run are used for public safety, beautification and free concerts in Onset village. Zecco Marine, Onset Bay Marina, G & S Marine, Atlantic Boats/Stonebridge Marina and Massachusetts Marine Trades Association have provided corporate sponsorships for the Paradise Poker Run.

"This is a fun event for the whole family," notes OBA Poker Run chairperson, Joanne Hamilton. "It's a great way to spend a Saturday on the water plus events like the Poker Run showcase how Onset is a destination for many lifestyles."

The five locations to which each boat must navigate for poker cards to build their hand stretch across the eastern end of Buzzards Bay. The five stops are: the Narrows at Besse Park in Wareham, the Marion town dock next to Barden's Boat Yard, a designated boat in Hadley's Harbor, a boat in Finney's Harbor at Monument Beach and a boat behind Bassett's Island in Red Brook Harbor.

The Poker Run is an opportunity for sailors to meet new boating friends and to become acquainted with some of the new products and ideas in the boating world as well as a way of enjoying a beautiful cruise on the bay and its surrounding waters.

The OBA is a non-profit 501 c(3) civic corporation representing a community that is working together to enhance the quality of life for every individual. For more information contact the Onset Bay Association at 508-295-7072 or visit the website at http://www.onsetvillage.com.

FROM BOATUS' SEAWORTHY ARCHIVES SPRING LINES
    THE KEY TO PAINLESS DOCKING

Below is an article worth copying for your newest boat owners....

Let's face it; your ability to handle your boat at the dock is the key to your reputation as a boat operator. Never mind that you just crossed the Atlantic using only a sextant and one-armed clock to navigate. If, upon arrival, you bounce off pilings and plow into the dock, that's what other skippers will remember. Read on at http://www.boatus.com/seaworthy/swlines.asp
