Massachusetts Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program
2006 Boating Season
Overview
This year, the Massachusetts Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Program will be coordinated by E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc., a waste and recycling service provider located in Westborough, MA.
Since this program's inception in 2003, over 119 tons of white marine shrink wrap has been collected and recycled from 22 sites on the north and south shores of Boston, in southern Massachusetts, and on Cape Cod and the island of Martha's Vineyard. Carol P. Ribeiro, from the Recycling Department at E.L. Harvey & Sons, Inc. will serve as this year's Program Coordinator.
Recycling Costs
As in past years, our goal is to provide a recycling program that charges a nominal fee and is self-sustaining. To support this effort, E. L. Harvey has agreed to provide recycling services this year at last year's rates.
Many local marinas charge between $11.00 and $17.00 per linear foot to shrink wrap boats for the winter season. For as little as 10¢ per linear foot, you can obtain complete shrink-wrap recycling services when it comes time to unwrap the boats this spring. The following table outlines this year's recycling services and costs:
Marine Shrink Wrap Recycling Fees - 2006 rates
| Approx. # of 30 foot boats that can fit | Container Cost | Approx. cost per 30 ft. boat
|
40 Yard "closed top" container (8' wide x 22' long x 8' high)
| 120 boats | $350.00 | $2.91 |
30 Yard "closed top" container (8' wide x 22' long x 6' high)
| 92 boats | $275.00 | $2.98 |
Sharing Containers
Marinas or boatyards who wish to share a container and split the cost may do so. Each marina must complete a Service Request for their portion of the container, and these Service Requests for shared services should be attached and sent together to E.L. Harvey.
Payments
Marinas are responsible for paying E. L. Harvey directly for recycling services.
Material Recycled
Please be aware that this program is for WHITE marine shrink wrap only. At this time, blue and clear shrink wrap are not permitted in the collection program.
Services Included
E.L. Harvey will provide the following services:
- Coordinate all container deliveries and pickups (a 48 hour notice is needed).
- Visit host sites to educate staff and monitor progress, if requested.
- Be available Monday through Friday during regular work hours to answer questions.
- Print and distribute educational materials to participating marinas.
Reasons to Join this Innovative Program:
- It's lower in cost than comparable recycling systems such as Dr. Shrink Wrap--recycling will cost approximately 10¢ per linear foot of shrink wrap (that's only $3.00 per 30 ft boat!).
- E.L. Harvey will manage the program, coordinating service requests, education, program monitoring, and material collection.
- It funds local recycling jobs in Massachusetts.
- It helps avoid possible future regulations limiting shrink wrap usage and disposal.
- It is endorsed by the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.
- Your customers will appreciate that you are doing the right thing for the environment and it will be good PR for your company!
Recycling Instructions
- Bundle shrink wrap.
- Remove all rope, strapping, wood frames, doors, zippers, and other non-shrink material. Any material other than shrink wrap is not allowed in the container!
- Keep shrink wrap clean and dry - no mud, rainwater, leaves, etc.
- Only include WHITE shrink wrap -- please do not include blue or clear!
- DO NOT tie the bundle with anything other than a strip of shrink wrap
Marine Shrink Wrap Bundling Procedure
Bundling the material enables you to maximize the amount of shrink wrap you can place in the recycling container, which lowers your costs.
Shrink Wrap Removal "Time Saving Tip"
If you cut the shrink cover just above the horizontal belly band, all of the string will be instantly separated from the shrink wrap and can be disposed of in the regular trash dumpster. The clean shrink wrap can then be folded and rolled up into a tight bundle for recycling.
Remaining wood, vents, doors, and other string must be disposed of in the trash.
