8TH ANNUAL BOSTON INTERNATIONAL IN WATER BOAT SHOW
CRUISES INTO BOSTON'S SEAPORT DISTRICT
The 8th annual Boston International in Water Boat Show cruises into Boston Harbor on Thursday, September 28th. Open daily to the public through Sunday, October 1st, hundreds of boats, accessories and marine service displays fill the World Trade Center located in the heart of Boston's Seaport District. Yachts fill the boat basin adjacent to the World Trade Center stretching from Northern Avenue to the Inner Harbor. With new show features like the Power Boat Docking Challenge, enhanced in-water displays, free admission for children under 12 in the company of an adult and children's loaner life jackets for dockside browsing, boaters and their families are certain to enjoy an entertaining, informative and affordable all day event, rain or shine. The Boat Show promises fun for kids and the kid in all of us!
The 2006 Boat Show features the newest in all types of boats--power, sail, cruising, skiing, fishing, paddle and personal watercraft--from US and international boat manufacturers ranging in size from 14 to 70-feet. Current boat owners, browsers and buyers also enjoy a preview of 2007 model year marine accessories, hardware, navigation equipment, electronics, engines, gear and apparel. With plenty of area parking and hundreds of exhibitors, the Boat Show draws thousands of boaters and visitors from across New England seeking to map our their boating itinerary for the coming year.
As savvy boat shoppers know, the Boston Show is the season's buying show thanks to the $250,000 Boat Buyer's Bonanza available exclusively at the Boston International In Water Boat Show. A member benefit of the show's non profit endorser, the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association (MMTA), the Bonanza distinguishes the Boston Show from all others. A Boat Buyer's Incentive Program, the Bonanza provides financial rewards for concluding sales at the Boston Show. No other boat show offers boat browsers a better reason to become boat owners. Last year eligible, participating Bonanza dealers reported over $13 million in sales while Bonanza coupons claimed had an average value of $2,000 per boat sold.
For the first time in Boston, the Boat Show will feature the Power Boat Docking Challenge, a 20-foot marina tank simulator where boaters of all ages and abilities can test their skills docking a twin engine, remote controlled Sport fishing boat. Challengers take the wheel at a full scale helm; navigate their vessel into the slip while their points are tallied by electronic sensors that measure time and operator skill. Think you are a dockside cowboy? Be sure to challenge your skills during the Power Boat Docking Challenge at the Boston International In Water Boat Show.
The Boston Show is also the place for experienced and novice boaters to brush up on their boating education. Complimentary seminars are hosted daily and include: Getting Your Captain's License presented by Boatwise, Basic Boat Handling presented by the USCG Auxiliary and a special presentation by Scott Shields, World Trade Center Unknown Heroes and Volunteer Boaters' Response to Katrina. "We are proud to offer a world class in water Boat Show in the heart of Boston each fall. Visitors to the show enjoy the wide range of boats and accessories on display, boating seminars and entertainment in an outstanding location within the heart of Boston. Browsing dockside and inside the World Trade Center allows New Englanders to stretch and enjoy their boating season just a little longer," stated Warren Kelly, founder of Vernon Promotions and producer of the Boston International In Water Boat Show.
The Boston International In Water Boat Show opens Thursday, September 28th and runs through Sunday, October 1st at the World Trade Center Boston within the Seaport District. For more information visit: http://www.bostoninwaterboatshow.com

MMTA 2007 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT CONFERENCE
MMTA has begun planning our 2007 Professional Development Conference to be held in mid January. As we make plans, preparations and select a venue we ask members to help us with two (2) items:
1. Conference Comments: Any comments or feedback on last year's conference that you are willing to share? We received surveys from many members who attended last year-but if there are members out there who did not attend because the Program did not interest them or the venue was inconvenient, we welcome your feedback.
2. Sponsor Suggestions: In addition to the Conference Content, success is measured by how affordable we can keep the conference for all member employees. Sponsorships underwrite 50% of the conference cost. Their contributions make your learning and networking experience comfortable, informative and enjoyable. Do you have any suggestions for who we might contact to be a Sponsor for this year's Conference? After we have heard from last year's sponsors, we will invite new potential sponsors to participate. Conference Sponsorship levels range from $350 to $5,000. Every sponsor is welcome and essential.
If you have an idea for the 2007 Conference of suggestions for Sponsors that we might approach, please send an email to Leona.Roach@BoatMA.com
To see the list of last years sponsors visit: http://www.boatma.com/membersonly/newsbriefs/2006_january_25_news.html

QUARTERLY STORM WATER TESTING: DO YOURS THIS SEASON
When it rains or snow melts, the resulting "storm water" may be absorbed into the ground or it may "runoff" the land surface into a nearby lake, stream, or estuary. Storm water runoff from natural (vegetated) land is typically low since most rain or snow melt infiltrates into the ground or is lost to evaporation. Storm water runoff increases as the percentage of impervious surface cover (e.g., streets, parking lots, rooftops) increases since the land's ability to absorb water is restricted. In addition to washing pollutants (e.g., hydrocarbons, nutrients, bacteria) into our surface waters, improperly managed storm water runoff can result in soil erosion and flooding.
The Clean Water Act authorizes EPA and states, when delegated the authority by EPA, to regulate point sources that discharge pollutants into waters of the United States through the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit program. So-called "point sources" are generated from a variety of municipal and industrial operations, including treated wastewater, process water, cooling water, and storm water runoff from drainage systems. For more information on reporting requirements under NPDES and whether you are required to participate in the program, visit these links:

NEW MASSACHUSETTS NO DISCHARGE COASTAL WATERS: PLYMOUTH, DUXBURY & KINGSTON
On August 23, CZM Director Susan Snow-Cotter, EPA Deputy Administrator Ira Leighton along with U.S. Congressman William Delahunt, and State Representatives Thomas O'Brien and Vinny deMacedo celebrated the designation of the Plymouth, Duxbury, and Kingston coastal waters as a No Discharge Area (NDA) prohibiting the discharge of all boat sewage.
Boat sewage can contain pathogens, nutrients, and chemical products, which can negatively affect aquatic life or degrade water quality. The total area of the new NDA is 63 square miles-the second largest in the Commonwealth. For more information about NDAs, including a list of coastal pumpout facilities, go to http://www.mass.gov/czm/nda.htm.

MARINE ENGINE MANUFACTURER DEVELOPS LOW EMISSION INBOARD MARINE ENGINES
Over the past several years, EPA, the marine industry, U.S. Coast Guard, California Air Resources Board, Southwest Research Institute, and others have worked on a series of development programs geared toward emission-reducing technologies for gasoline-powered marine engines. These programs have had promising results. Now, one manufacturer, who participated in these programs, Indmar Marine Engines, is selling inboard marine engines with catalytic exhaust after treatment, which reduces emissions from these engines. To learn more about this technology visit http://www.epa.gov/otaq/regs/nonroad/marine/si/420f06057.htm
