JOBS IN BOATING: MARINE PROJECT COORDINATOR WANTED



On June 7 the Massachusetts recreational marine trades were awarded a $585,000 State Workforce Competitive Trust Fund Grant.  Commonwealth Corporation, a division of the Massachusetts Executive Office of
Labor and Workforce development, announced the 'Jobs in Boating' grant at a ceremony at Massasoit Community College (MCC) in Brockton, MA.

Partners in the 'Jobs in Boating' grant include MMTET, the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association, Massasoit Community College, Bristol Community College and My-Turn, Inc. The Partners envision the establishment of a Center of Excellence for recreational marine trades' education, training and workforce development with headquarters at the Professional Development Center, Massasoit Community College, Canton, MA.

The Center of Excellence at Massasoit Community College will be staffed full-time with a program coordinator to conduct outreach to potential marine studies candidates who may otherwise miss the chance to enter a field full of tremendous career opportunity following high school graduation or changes in employment status or life circumstances.  The program coordinator will also be charged with establishing programs to educate and train candidates while enhancing existing programs.

Position: Marine Project Coordinator         Position Available: Immediately

General Statement of Duties:  The Project Coordinator will serve as a liaison among all grant and marine industry partners, convening meetings, maintaining contact, facilitating trainings, trouble shooting, and ensuring projected activities are accomplished on time. The Coordinator will facilitate identification of training needs, facilitate curriculum development, and present marine career opportunities to public schools, career centers, and agencies. 

Candidate will, with agency partners, coordinate participant recruitment, selection, tracking, and support, including career coaching, internships and job placement, and will develop methods for maintaining the documentation required for mandated reports on the budget, programmatic outcomes, and participant progress.
 
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in a related field required; Three to five years of experience as an administrator or project coordinator required; must have knowledge of the recreational marine field.
Experience in education and grants, knowledge of the State Workforce Development System preferred. Outstanding computer skills (MS Office, Powerpoint), communication skills, and presentation skills. Documented ability to serve as a 
successful liaison among several constituency groups.
 
Shift: 37.5 Hours                                          Salary: $50,000.00 Yearly -

MARINE TECHNICAN CERTIFICATE PROGRAM NOW ENROLLING






Have employees who would like to advance in your organzation?

No time to train but still need full time employees?
 

The Marine Technician Certificate Program is taught 2 EVENINGS per week and every 3rd SATURDAY
beginning in early September.  Students who begin the program in the fall and advance through all 3 Modules are eligible to receive their Certificate in May-just in time for your busy season!  Don't delay, classes are filling fast and enrollment is affordable! 

A Message From Massasoit Community College's Elaine Stewart, Dean of Workforce Development and Community Education

The coming year is an exciting one for Massasoit Community College's marine program. We have been awarded a large three-year grant to work with MMTA toward enhanced recruitment and training for the recreational marine workforce. I'm sure we will be asking for your input and participation in many of the grant activities.

Today, I am writing to let you know that we still have several openings in our 350-hour marine technician program that starts in September. I'm happy to report that our outstanding instructor, John Bernier, will be continuing to teach the program.

The program runs two evenings per week (Tues and Thurs) plus several Saturdays from September to May. If you have an office or dock employee that you think has potential as a marine technician, please consider referring him or her to our program. If you choose to sponsor this employee for the program and you employ fewer than 50 employees, you can recoup 50% of the tuition through the Workforce Express Program. Several employers have used our program in the past, and they have been pleased with the knowledge and skills acquired by their employees.

Marine Technician Fundamentals (140 Hours):  The 1st of 3 modules required to earn the MMTA 350 hour Marine Technician Certificate.  The course begins with a brief overview of the marine industry working environment for technicians, marine tools and equipment and safety training.  Introduced are three basic principles of:  Internal combustion engines; engine systems; basic electricity; theory of power generation. In addition, fuel water, steering, electrical, lubrication, ventilation, ignition and instrumentation systems are presented as well as basic troubleshooting for each system.  Also covered are spring preparation and repair, fall lay-up, trailering, yard equipment, and basic boat moving and handling.    Course #:  CSTT205 

Marine Technician Outboard Engines (96 Hours):  The 2nd of 3 modules.  Participants learn the various parts and processes involved in installation, repair and maintenance of outboard engines.  Included are the instructions on fuel, electrical lubrication and cooling systems of 2 and 4 stroke outboards both carbureted and fuel injected. Also covered are lower units and propulsion, power tilt/trim, tune-up, troubleshooting, winterization and preventative maintenance. Course #: CSTT206

Marine Technicians Inboard Engines (114 Hours):  The 3rd of 3 Modules.  Participants learn theory design, operation, controls, installation, maintenance and troubleshooting skills for marine inboard, inboard outboard and diesel engines.  The design differences among engines as well as their various cooling, lubrication. exhaust, gearing, propulsion, transmission and hydraulic systems are presented.    Module 1 & 2 are pre-requisites for this course.  Course #  CSTT207

All Courses include lecture and hands on training.  All Courses held at Massasoit's Canton Campus.  All 3 Modules must be successfully completed to receive the industry-recognized Marine Technician Certificate From the Massachusetts Marine Trades Association.  Through this program, assistance in gaining a position in the recreational marine trades is offered through MMTA.  Criteria for Enrollment  High School Diploma or GED; Basic Familiarity with tools; ability to lift 50 -70 lbs; Commitment to taking all 3 courses in the Certificate Program; Commitment to working in the marine industry.

MARINE TECH PROGRAM ELIGIBLE FOR WTF EXPRESS

The Marine Tech Certificate Program is approved for the State Workforce Training Fund Express Program. 

Companies with fewer than 50 employees who pay for an employee's training and meet other eligibility requirements can recoup 50% of the tuition for the course.

Preamble To Massachusetts Marine Trades Association By Laws c. 1964

The Purpose For The Formulation Of The Massachusetts Marine Trades Association Is To Establish An Organization Of Dedicated Men And Women Who Are Employed In The Marine Industry With The Concept That This Organization Will Provide The Framework For Furthering The Interests Of The Marine Trades And The Boating Public Through The Promotion Of Boating, Participation In Legislation And Professional Improvement Programs.  It Is Further Hoped That The Association Will Be The Focal Point For Exchange Of Ideas Concerning Marine Matters And That A High Standard Of Professional And Ethical Conduct Will Be Adhered To By The Membership.
