AMERICA'S CUP "DELAYED"
AS REPORTED BY IBI Magazine AC
Management (ACM), the organisation responsible for running the America's
Cup, said in a statement on Thursday that the ongoing lawsuit between BMW
Oracle Racing and Team Alinghi, which represents the Société Nautique de Genève
(SNG), has prompted it to postpone the event in 2009.
"During the past months, AC
Management (ACM), the Société Nautique de Genève (SNG) and the Club Náutico
Español de Vela (CNEV), in conjunction with the competing Challengers, have
worked hand in hand to develop the rules and regulations for an event in 2009," read
the statement. "These rules and regulations were agreed by all
competitors and supported by the most recent entrants bringing the number
of registered syndicates to eight, with an additional two currently filing entry
documents." BMW Oracle Racing (BOR),
representing the Golden Gate Yacht Club (GGYC), had filed a lawsuit in July
against SNG in New York state, alleging that the challenge filed by local
yacht club CNEV was not valid under the original deed of the
America's Cup. It contended that Alinghi was "self-dealing" in
terms of the control it would exert over the event. Six syndicates in the
previous event also said that the new challenge was the "worst text
in the history of the event."
But
the lawsuit, said yesterday's ACM statement, "leaves the organisers no
choice but to delay the event, as many indicators demonstrate a lack of
viability to stage the event in 2009 to the same standards as the
32nd America's Cup." If the New York Supreme Court
rules that CNEV is valid and BOR chooses not to appeal the decision, said
the statement, "ACM will endeavour to work with the competitors to
adapt the existing rules and regulations and put in place a new framework
for an event to take place at a later stage in Valencia. Should the US
Courts rule against CNEV, SNG will accept the Golden Gate Yacht Club Deed
of Gift Challenge and meet them in a vessel, possibly a
multihull, in accordance with the terms of the Deed of
Gift." The Golden Gate Yacht Club
(GGYC), which BMW Oracle represents, said in a statement that the decision
to postpone the next America's Cup by Alinghi was "unfortunate and
unnecessary." "There have been many opportunities to resolve the new
protocol without taking this step," said Tom Ehman, the Club's
spokesman, in a statement. Ehman said the offer made last week by three
challengers and GGYC to amend the protocol addressed everyone's concerns and would
have enabled the event to go ahead as planned. "The club hopes it will
still be possible for the event to be held in Valencia on schedule,"
said Ehman. GGYC had predicted the delay a
week earlier. Russell Coutts, CEO of the BMW Oracle team, said in a
statement that there had been indications over recent weeks Alinghi had
been planning to postpone the event for "commercial" reasons.
"This confirms that the people who are supposed to promote the regatta
are instead the ones who are now resisting everyone else's efforts to get
it back on track," Coutts said in a statement. "There is no reason for the
event to be delayed. Together with a majority of the challengers we have
delivered a fair, genuine and honorable best last shot. Alinghi's rejection
of this is a disgrace and can only be taken to indicate they reached a point
probably long ago where they do not in fact want the event to go ahead as
planned." Louis Vuitton announced in July that it was
pulling out as the major commercial sponsor of the Louis Vuitton Challenge
and America's Cup event. Other analysts noted that a delay would put a
heavier financial burden on teams with less funds than BMW Oracle or
Alinghi.
According to www.tv3.co.nz, Team New Zealand is now
denying rumors that the legal dispute between the other competitors could
ruin its chance to take part in the next America's Cup. The Times reported
that manager Grant
Dalton told his team that if the dispute is not resolved by the end of the
year, and the final race is not held in 2009, the team will close. But a
Team New Zealand spokesman denied the story, saying the rumors were being promoted by a
"mischievous website blog". (23 November

BOSTON ON BOARD FOR VOLVO OCEAN
RACE
MARK YOUR CALENDAR - MAY 2009 The U.S.
East Coast port city of Boston has been formally announced as a
stopover for the 2008-09 Volvo Ocean Race. The long-awaited news that
Boston will be the only North American stopover for the Volvo Ocean Race
was announced at a ceremony to introduce the Boston-based entry, PUMA
Racing Team to the world's press. The U.S.
entry will be skippered by top American sailor Ken Read and sponsored by
the global sport lifestyle company PUMA, which has its North American and
international brand headquarters in the historic U.S. city, where billions of dollars
have been spent on reclaiming the harbour under its Save the Harbor/Save
the Port project. PUMA Global introduced Read, their training boat (ex-ABN AMRO TWO)
and the PUMA Racing Team at a function in the Boston Harbor Hotel attended
by Boston Mayor Thomas M. Menino, PUMA CEO Jochen Zeitz, Volvo Ocean Race CEO
Glenn Bourke, Save the Harbor President Patricia A. Foley, and Secretary
Daniel O'Connell of Massachusetts. Bourke said that the
confirmation of Boston as a host port was a welcome addition to the new
ground-breaking route which includes the Middle East and Asia for the first
time in the race's 34-year history. "Boston
has a proud association with international sailing and sailors. There has
been great enthusiasm from everyone involved in making the Boston stopover
happen. I fully expect that Boston will put on a tremendous show when the race
comes to town," he said. "It's also a major fillip for the Volvo Ocean Race and the sport
of sailing to have involvement from an iconic global consumer brand such as
PUMA," he added. "There is
definitely synergy between us – the Volvo Ocean Race leads the way on
advanced design with the Volvo Open 70, while PUMA brings great energy and
creativity to the design of their sports lifestyle products,"
Bourke said PUMA officials have worked closely with the local government in
Boston to help bring the Volvo Ocean Race to the city. City of Boston Mayor, Thomas M.
Menino said: "We are delighted that Boston has been selected as the
only North American stopover for the 2008-2009 Volvo Ocean Race.
"World Class events
like this, with great partners like PUMA, Volvo and Save the Harbor/Save
the Bay give folks from our neighbourhoods and visitors from across the
region and around the world another reason to rediscover all that Boston
Harbor and waterfront have to
offer." Two weeks of festivals and local
events are planned during mid-May 2009, to celebrate the arrival and
departure of the Volvo Ocean Race, Boston's maritime history and the sport
of sailing. A
point-scoring in-port race will be held in Boston Harbour if the wind is in
a favourable direction. Alternatively the race will be held just outside
the harbour. A
pro-am race, which takes place in every host port the day after the in-port
race, will be held inside the harbour with racing close by to Fan Pier and
Rowes Wharf. The pro-am race is not a points scoring race and does not have a set course
enabling it to be tailored to suit each venue and making it a
close-to-shore spectator event. Every boat
in the Volvo fleet will take part, and will be sailed by half its normal
race crew, with the remainder being made up of specially invited guests.
At the ceremony in
Boston, PUMA Racing Team unveiled its colours on the newly-painted training
boat, the former ABN AMRO TWO. "This is a special day as we introduce our
PUMA Racing Team and unveil the colours of our boat in this
wonderful setting of Boston Harbor," said Jochen Zeitz, CEO and Chairman,
PUMA AG. "We are extremely pleased that
the City of Boston, the State of Massachusetts and Save the Harbor are
welcoming the Volvo Ocean Race as an official port of call and, as a
company, we are proud to be able to call Boston the home of our North
American and international brand headquarters for more than a
decade." Patricia A. Foley, President,
Save the Harbor/Save the Bay said: "With billions of public dollars
invested in the Boston Harbor Clean-up and the Big Dig, and billions more
invested in new waterfront development, we are looking forward to the fantastic
opportunity that this stopover will provide to share the harbor with
Bostonians, regional residents and visitors from around the
world.""The Volvo
Ocean Race is about the power of the sea, the wind, and the sun – and the
power of people with the courage to follow their dreams," she continued.
"It will provide us with a unique platform to share the message that
clean water matters, and that people with the courage of their convictions
can make the planet a better place."
PUMA
announced its entry into the Volvo Ocean Race in late March. Skipper Ken
Read was on-hand for the unveiling of the boat, after bringing her up to
Boston from her training base in Newport, Rhode Island.
