Two newspapers recently had articles concerning the growth of proposed bans for so-called “Jet Skis”, or personal watercraft. As reported previously, it has been proposed to limit them to lakes, ponds or coastal areas of over 500 acres. This proposal seems to be gaining momentum in the state. Present limits are over 75 acres.
While not yet approved by Richard Murray, Mass. Division of Law Enforcement Director, this proposal would appear to be on the “fast track’ for approval. The bigger problem is that there is a movement on to include motorized watercraft in these bans. This obviously would affect all smaller outboards or I/Os used on these waters. As we go to press, we have determined that the bill has been referred to committee for study which will probably “kill” it for this year.
Some sort of “middle ground” must be reached to prevent unnecessary regulations that would hinder recreational boating growth.
