At a recent NEMTA meeting attended by Ed Lofgren and John Spillane for the Mass. Marine Trades, the following state associations reported as follows: Maine: A special light-trailer/transporter plate was approved for small haulers. This can be used on boat owner’s trailers as well. A new fresh-water decal was approved ($10.) The Maine Association won a $30,000 DEP “319” grant for a Casco Bay Clean Marina Project. Maine has just over 200 members in the Association. Rhode Island: An 18 or younger mandatory education boating bill would appear to be approved. Also one to make licensing for Personal Watercraft a reality. Disposal of dredging waste is a major problem. The ME Association is working with the Legislature to alter the existing law to make such disposal easier and less costly. Connecticut: The Association was unsuccessful in getting rid of fees and taxes on boating. For example, 50 cents per ticket is levied on Hartford Civic Center events, including their Boat Show. They have committed $10,000 to a member education fund. Presently over 300 members including Yacht Clubs at $285 for a full member.
New President of the New England Marine Trades Association is Grant Westerson of Connecticut.
