  • -- Mass. Maritime Courses
    January 2002

Just a reminder to those who haven’t sent in their registration for the Employee Education courses starting January 14th at Mass. Maritime Academy. We need to know ASAP so we can re-schedule the classes in case we have to double up on some.

For example, at present the optional Diesel Course has a waiting list. During January and February many of the instructors are away and the particular facilities for diesel, electricity, I/O, and Outboard are limited, so the class size is also limited.

Courses being offered include:

  • I. Communication with Marine Industry Certification ( Jan. 14 from 8 AM to 4 PM)
  • II. Introduction to Marine Electrical Systems (Jan. 21 and 23, from 8 AM to 12 Noon)
  • III-A. Inboard/Outboard Engines Jan. 30 from 8 AM to 4 PM)
  • III-B. Pump Out Systems (Feb. 1 from 8 AM to 12 Noon)
  • III-C. Outboard Engines (Feb. 18 from 8 AM to 4 PM)
  • IV. Paint and Paint Repair (Feb. 4 and 6 from 8 AM to 12 Noon)
  • V. Fiberglass Repair (Feb. 11 and 13 from 8 AM to 12 Noon)
Prospective employees will be offered a 45 hour course at Massasoit’s Canton Campus starting January 29th thru May 14th, 2002 from 6:30 to 9:30 PM.

This is a course similar to the successful one just completed in December (see separate article on page 4) and provides entry-level training for those interested in a career in or course change to the recreational marine trades.

There are five basic modules in the course:

  • The Boating Trades—An Overview (3 hours)
  • Marine Business Operations and Customer Service (6 hours)
  • Basic Electricity for Marine Electrical Systems (15 hours)
  • Boatyard Skills (15 hours)
  • Marine Industry Certification (6 hours)
If you know of prospective employees who desire more information about the recreational marine trades, this is an ideal course. Separate brochures are available—contact Ed Lofgren, Education Committee Chairman, MMTA, 781-749-3250.

III-D. Four-Day Diesel Training Jan. 28 to 31 from 9AM to 4:30 PM) Note; applications received will be on a waiting list at this time but send them in anyway!

These courses are sponsored by a Workforce Training Fund Grant the Association received and there is no cost for them except for the employee’s normal rate of pay. An employee may take any or all of the courses (as long as there is no conflict in times). They have been planned during a peiod and times when we hope there will be minimal interruption to a firm’s operations.

If you don’t have a registration form, please FAX Ray Gaffey at 781-545-2803 or e-mail at raygaffey@mediaone.net. We need these immediately for proper planning. Incidentally, if transportation is a problem, those expenses may be eligible for an MMTA Employee Grant—see page 64 of the current Membership Directory.
