On March 27th, at Boston Yacht Haven on Commercial Wharf, representatives from Mass. Marine Trades Association, Cape Cod Marine Trades Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, New England, Mass. Executive Office of environmental Affairs, National Marine Manufacturers Association, Marine Retailers Association of America, and Cape Cod Marine Trades Association, gathered to sign a Memorandum of Understanding regarding Low Pollution Marine Engines. Present at the signing was Robert Varney, Regional Administrator for EPA New England, Tom Skinner for Bob Durand, Mass. Environmental Affairs Secretary, Kevin Zinn for NMMA, Larry Russo for MRAA, Tom Cox, First Vice President of MMTA, and Peter Way, President of CCMTA.
This MOU is an attempt to accelerate the phase-in of low pollution outboard and personal watercraft engines in Massachusetts. This is a purely voluntary program for Marine Dealers. So-called “Low Pollution” engines are those that meet or exceed the 2006 EPA requirements for emissions standards. Engines that presently meet these standards are direct fuel injection two-stroke and four-stroke models.
