  • Maine’s Tough New Law

Beginning in 2002, all motorized watercraft on Maine’s inland waters must display a Lake and River Protection Sticker.

Maine is the only eastern state where Eurasian Milfoil, an invasive aquatic plant, has not been found. These plants spread rapidly and are impossible to remove once established. Boating activity is the primary way plants are spread between waters through plant parts carried on boats, motors, fishing gear, and trailers. Boats being brought into Maine will be checked to be sure they have a new sticker - $20 for non-residents; $10 for residents. Stickers are available wherever boats are registered in Maine or fishing tackle sold and at toll areas going into the State. Since the penalties are substantial, we suggest you advise your customers trailering their boats into Maine to obtain the required sticker.
