6th Annual National Clean Boating Celebration
In April, the Marine Environmental Education Foundation and the National Clean Boating Campaign announced that the 6th Annual National Clean Boating Celebration will be held on June 21, 2003 in Boston at Boston Yacht Haven on Commercial Wharf. This is co-sponsored by the U. S. environmental protection Agency (Zone 1), and Mass. Marine Trades Association. Other groups include MA Off ice of Coastal Zone Management, University of MA - Urban Harbor Institute, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the Boston Harbor Association, Save the Harbor-Save the Bay, Tennessee Valley Authority, and Russo’s Marina.
It should be noted that Boston Harbor, in the past 15 years, has been undergoing a clean harbor campaign which has resulted in cleaner water and improved marine habitat in both the Harbor and Mass. Bay. The event and locale, illustrates the success of the campaign’s year-round initiative that promotes good stewardship of water resources by boaters, marina operators, boat dealers, and manufacturers and is in keeping with the campaign’s slogan: “ Boating is good clean fun. Let’s keep it that way.”
The principal objectives of the Celebration are:
- To generate positive local, state, regional & national media coverage of clean boating, clean marinas, and clean waterways.
- To recognize agencies and organizations whose goals and programs are aimed at keeping our waters and marinas clean and desirable.
- To introduce to boaters, marina users, and the general public the concepts of clean boating through the Dockwalkers Program.
As part of the Dockwalkers Program, volunteers from local area organizations will distribute kits to the various marinas and boaters in Boston Harbor. High ranking officials from various federal, state, and local agencies will participate and tour the local marinas.
After a few brief speeches and award presentations, there will be exhibits, demonstrations, entertainment, and some hands-on activities open to the public at the marinas and wharfs. The Dockwalkers will distribute the National Clean Boating Celebration's publication “A Guide to a Cleaner Boating Environment” to boaters, marinas and launch users, and anyone interested in learning about clean boating.
All members of Mass. Marine Trades are welcome to the celebration starting at 10:30 AM. The VIP/Ceremony will be from 11:00 am to 12:15 pm followed by a reception and luncheon.
