  • Pressure Washing – Regulations

It appears the CZM and EPA are anxious to educate the boating industry on the issues about pressure washing boats as well as the disposal of bilge water in boat yards.

Nine representatives from MMTA met with Robin Lacey of the CZM on May 19th to discuss pressure washing, the regulations, and solutions. Since wash water is considered industrial waste water, it needs some pre-treatment before discharge to sanitary sewer, groundwater, or surface waters.

Since few yards – or municipalities with launch ramps, for that matter – are in compliance with the current regulations, it was felt detailed guidance about the regulatory requirements should be available, including treatment options for small to large yards. Obviously the cost for some treatment systems, would be prohibitive for many smaller yards.

A recycling closed loop system – or other zero discharge type – may be the best choice for many locations that do not have sanitary sewer access. This type requires no monitoring as do the other systems currently available. However the sediment and water (which when discharged has to meet at least drinking water status,), may have to be collected by an approved treatment firm.

To determine exact requirements and financially feasible solutions, the CZM hopes to establish some pilot programs this year which will then be distributed to the industry. MMTA is working with the CZM in this regard and will keep their members informed.
