  • WasteCap Grant

This spring, MMTA matched the American Plastics Council’s grant of $7,500 to fund a pilot shrink wrap recycling project developed and managed by WasteCap of Massachusetts. The pilot project targeted more than 5,000 boats in fifty-eight marinas and boat yards across the state, and significantly reduced this spring’s landfill disposal fees for participating marinas. The project also diverted shrink wrap from landfills and incinerators, sending it to a manufacturer who will use it as feedstock in the production new products.

Participating marinas cut belly bands, windows/doors, and rope out of their clean white shrink wrap before bringing it to a regional drop-off site for free disposal. Drop-off locations were in Newburyport, Gloucester, Beverly, Salem, Danvers, Marblehead, Quincy, Hingham, Cohasset, Marshfield, Duxbury, Plymouth, Fall River, and Ludlow.

As the unwrapping season winds down, WasteCap is busy collecting data and feedback so the program can be expanded and improved for next year. If you participated in this pilot program, or have ideas about implementing it next year, WasteCap would like to hear from your! Please contact Katrina Rideout, program Manager, at 617-236-7715 or Katrina@wastecap.org.

WasteCap of Massachusetts (www.wastecap.org) is the non-profit, statewide, public/private partnership working with the business community to develop and implement cost-effective programs for recycling, buying recycled, reuse, and waste reduction.
