  • TYPICAL HARBOR CHARGES

The city of Boston wants to initiate user/mooring fees on boats docked or moored in Boston. We initiated a survey of 23 of the major harbors on the coast to determine what charges, if any, are being made. The area covered was from Newburyport to New Bedford. Boston was not included.

All collected the state excise tax on boats with the funds going to a city/town waterways fund of some sort.

Mooring fees for residents ran from $2.00 /ft. to $100. /boat with the average being about $5.00/ft. Nonresidents paid about $11.00/ft.

Some towns in addition charged a “user-type" fee for boats in private marinas for the season. These ran from$2.00/ft to $5.00/ ft.

Transient (overnight) dockage on town moorings varied from $1.00 /ft/night to $30.00/night and were assigned by the Harbormaster. None required an additional fee to place a mooring beyond the standard mooring fee.

Additional fees assessed included dinghy tie-ups, ramp fees (daily & seasonal), and a kayak/canoe fee.

Mooring assignments and fees were generally assessed by the Harbormasters with the income paying a portion of their expenses.
