  • MANDATORY BOATING SAFETY -(LICENSES)?

Were you aware that every New England state has instituted mandatory boating education – EXCEPT Massachusetts and Maine? We do have a limited education requirement for minors.

So the “push” is on to require some sort of certificate for boat operators in this state, hopefully by 2007. Based on NASBLA’s recommendations, it would apply to all residents born on or after Jan. 1, 1989 who would have to obtain an approved boating certificate by Jan. 1 2007. Minimum age for Personal Watercraft Operators would remain at 16 years. This is not considered to be licensing.

This is all in the very preliminary stages so details on required boating safety courses are still scant. The minimum standard of boating safety education competency would be consistent with that established by the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA). As more details come for this, we will advise you.
